Circle of Koi — The Golden Ones is part of an ongoing body of work exploring movement, rhythm and the meditative beauty found within natural forms and repeated pattern.

Arranged in a spiralling circular formation, the koi appear to glide endlessly around one another, creating a sense of quiet motion and balance. Their flowing composition evokes ideas of continuity, connection and calm — reminiscent of water currents, celestial movement and the restorative stillness often found in observing nature.

Each individual koi has been sculpted by hand from layers of polymer clay using the traditional Japanese-inspired Mokume Gane technique, where multiple coloured layers are compressed, textured and carefully sliced to reveal intricate organic patterns beneath the surface. The resulting markings feel both natural and ornamental, echoing the scales, reflections and fluid shimmer of fish moving through water.

Warm tones of coral, gold, amber, cream and soft blush move throughout the composition, contrasted by the presence of a single cool blue koi at the centre — a quiet focal point that introduces a subtle sense of individuality within the collective rhythm of the piece.

Metallic detailing and glossy surface accents catch and reflect the light, while each koi is delicately raised from the backing board to create shifting shadows and a sculptural sense of depth. As natural light changes throughout the day, the artwork continually transforms, revealing new highlights, textures and movement within the composition.

Balancing contemporary relief sculpture with decorative craftsmanship, Circle of Koi — The Golden Ones is designed to bring warmth, tranquillity and tactile beauty into interior spaces while celebrating the elegance, symbolism and restorative energy of koi.

Created through a slow, highly detailed and meditative process of sculpting, layering and composition, the work reflects an ongoing exploration of repetition, flow and the emotional resonance of organic form.
