Part of Amanda’s ongoing Find Your Wings and Fly Away series, this sculptural paper relief explores transformation, movement and sensory stillness through layers of hand-cut butterflies suspended within space and light.

For this piece, Amanda began by printing three scales of her original butterfly drawing onto textured watercolour paper before intuitively painting flowing marks and organic patterns in layered tones of ultramarine, aqua, turquoise and soft blue-grey. Darker watercolour splashes gather towards the upper section of the composition before gradually dissolving into lighter tones below, creating a calming transition from deep ocean blues to soft silvered light.

The butterflies were then separated into tonal groups and individually hand-finished with metallic blue, aqua and silver detailing across the wings. Each butterfly was carefully cut by hand and arranged into a graduating formation, with richer metallic blues concentrated towards the top of the piece, softening into luminous silver tones below.

Mounted onto heavy watercolour paper and presented within a white Perspex-glazed deep box frame, the work subtly shifts throughout the day as changing light catches the metallic surfaces and casts delicate shadows from the raised wings. From a distance, the artwork appears as a flowing contemporary abstract composition; on closer inspection, hundreds of individual butterflies gradually emerge — inviting quiet observation, immersion and reflection.

Balancing delicacy with repetition and rhythm, Find Your Wings and Fly Away X embodies the Sensory & Slow philosophy of creating artworks that encourage pause, softness and emotional calm within interior spaces.
