Memento Mori is a celebration of contradiction — a meditation on mortality expressed through beauty, ornament and light. Inspired by the enduring symbolism of the skull as a reminder of life's impermanence, this one-of-a-kind sculptural work transforms a traditionally sombre subject into an object of fascination, reflection and wonder.
Built upon a resin skull form and painstakingly embellished by hand, the surface is covered with hundreds of individually applied elements including polymer clay motifs, iridescent pearls, faceted crystals, metallic details and shimmering beads. The slow, repetitive process of applying each component becomes an act of decoration meditation — a practice of patience, focus and mindful making that sits at the heart of the collection.
As light moves across the sculpture, countless reflective surfaces catch and scatter illumination, creating shifting highlights and subtle flashes of colour. Delicate skull motifs emerge from within the intricate surface, revealing themselves gradually amongst layers of ornamentation and detail.
Balancing themes of transience and permanence, Memento Mori explores our instinct to adorn, preserve and celebrate. Part sculpture, part jewel and part contemporary memento, it invites us to contemplate the preciousness of life while finding beauty in the passing of time.
