Part of the Lightness in Flight collection, Somewhere Over the Rainbow celebrates colour, movement and the uplifting sense of possibility often associated with butterflies in flight. Hundreds of individually cut butterflies gather in flowing, undulating formations that sweep across the surface in a vibrant spectrum of rainbow hues. Moving gradually from cool blues and greens through luminous yellows and warm oranges to rich pinks, the composition creates a sense of energy, optimism and joyful transformation.
Unlike many of the works in the series, the butterflies were arranged and assembled before colour was applied, allowing the painted surface to flow continuously across both the sculptural forms and the background beneath. Watercolour splashes and subtle variations in tone bring depth and spontaneity to the piece, while scattered gold-leaf butterflies catch the light and add moments of quiet brilliance. As shadows shift and reflective details change throughout the day, Somewhere Over the Rainbow reveals new layers of texture and movement, inviting closer observation and offering a celebration of lightness, colour and the beauty of transformation.
